For nearly five decades, the Clearwater Free Clinic has been a vital lifeline for low-income, uninsured residents in mid to upper Pinellas County. Founded 48 years ago by a small group of volunteer doctors in a modest home, the Clinic was created to meet a growing need: accessible, comprehensive health care for individuals and families who fall through the cracks of government assistance and private insurance.
Today, the Clinic continues that mission by offering problem-oriented primary health care at no cost. Services include office visits, lab work, x-rays, medications, specialty referrals, and behavioral health care. What truly sets the Clearwater Free Clinic apart is its commitment to providing care without government funding and its status as the only free clinic in Florida to serve children.
As a volunteer-driven, nonprofit medical facility, the Clinic supports those who might otherwise avoid seeking care due to cost. Many of their patients are hardworking individuals with limited incomes whose jobs do not provide health benefits, yet whose earnings disqualify them from public assistance. Without the Clinic, these individuals often rely on emergency rooms for non-urgent issues or delay care altogether, leading to more serious health concerns.
Their mission is simple: keep patients healthy so they can continue working, caring for their families, and enjoying life. By reducing the financial and emotional strain that comes with untreated health issues, the Clearwater Free Clinic makes a meaningful impact on the health and stability of the community.
While the Clinic is based in Clearwater, their reach extends throughout mid to north Pinellas County, including the Dunedin area. And when asked for a favorite local spot, the team gave a shout-out to Bon Appetit Restaurant—a classic Dunedin gem.
